Welcome to San Fierro (Article from PSM2 October Magazine):
Bang. We're starting at CJ, the lead character, but are forced to blink. He's now sporting a loose afro-handlebar 'tache and hooded top (with the Rockstar logo), plus black Converse All Stars. It's our first glimpse of the extensive character customisation options - more on that later. He's stood in san Fransico's hippy neighbourhood Haight and Ashbury - the home of the 1960s Free Love movement - now renamed Hashbury (groan) and Garcia in vintage Rockstar style. The buildings are quaint and flat-topped, selling beatnik goods and kick-knacks. A Hippy Shopper store (double groan) lies in the background, with a VW Camper Van parked out front. A 3D Indian clown character protrudes from one of the shop fronts - a nice touch - and the vibe is crisp and sleepy.
Wasting no time, CJ leaps on an NRG 500 bike (like the sports bike from Vice City) and cruises down the street. Jeff from Rockstar flicks the camera into a side view so we can get a closer look at the pedestrians. The variety is incredible - from scuffy homeless bums to suit-wearin professionals and ladies in breathtakingly scant bikinis. Y'know, dental floss-style bikinis. Before we can ogle her, CJ rides past a selection of open-air markets, pipe shops and convenience stores before crusing past the (quasi) famous Garcia Park. huge swirling statuettes rise from the floor bedecked in shiny mosaic stones - another incredible piece of peripheral detail. Before you ask - yes - the road gives way to a deep incline. We're cruising down a harsh 45 degree slope, like a scene from the classic Steve McQueen movie Bullitt. In no time, CJ pulls up outside a gym - or rather, Dojo - and we get our first look at combat training.
