Incase anyone is interested, I have found the location of one of the two player free roam icons in Los Santos, here I wrtoe out the easiest way to get there IMO:
Go to the Tattooist in Idlewood, Los Santos. Go straight NORTH from there (take the left-hand road not the one that goes up a slope). About 2 blocks up, just next to the highway, you will come to a short, open built building with fences around it and arched hollow doors. Go in there to find the 2 player free roam icon. Stand on it and press any button on player 2's controller.
